Record stores
I am going to review a slew of the record stores i've been visted and rare my experience and their selection. First, before I review anything, I am going to list all of the Michigan record stores i've been to within the Metro Detroit/East Side/Ann Arbor area. Ones that are STILL ACTIVE, mind you. Let us begin.

ANN ARBOR:
Encore
Wazoo
Underground Sounds
PJs CDs and Vinyl

DEARBORN:
Stormy Records
Dearborn Music

CLAWSON:
Flipside Records

BEVERLY HILLS:
Street Corner Music

DETROIT:
Peoples Records

ST. CLAIR SHORES:
Car City Records

EASTPOINTE:
Melodies and Memories

ROYAL OAK:
Solo Cassettes and Tapes

FERNDALE:
Record Collector

ROSEVILLE:
Record Time

HAMTRAMCK:
Record Graveyard
Detroit Threads

TRENTON:
Slick Disk

GARDEN CITY:
Rock of Ages

Okay, aside from Rock-A-billys in Utica, those are all of the local record shops I've been to. Some are fantastic, some really are forgettable, some aren't listed because they are long gone (Hot Hits, Record Time Ferndale, Dearborn Music Canton, School Kids) and of course the mysterious Cousins Vinyl which I guess might open soon.

Before I review, whats YOUR opinion? Also, did I miss any ones? I try and stay on top of EVERY record store in my area.

There's a few of those i've not been to. Most are okay but the only ones I really like are Stormy, Encore, Wazoo and Car City.

Don't bother with Slick Disk or Solo Cassettes & Tapes.

Those are my tops as well. Car City is a post-punk's paradise. I blame Dion for that. Stormy is classic, and Encore is the best in Michigan as far as I am concerned.

Stormy is like the quintessential indie record store. It's basically perfect. And Windy and Carl are both peaches.

Have you heard their music?

Yeah, its not bad. They've gotten around too. Toured with the Silver Apples and such before.

It is an indie store in every meaning of the word. They specialize in independent releases. haha. People always are afraid to tell their friends about Stormy because they don't want competition!

It's true and Windy knows this and has complained about it many a time.

Car City is awesome

Rock of Ages is legendary (as far as hype) but I think their selection is decent.

Record Time isn't bad either, I could hang around there for hours.

Hot Topic should be mentioned, but it should also be mentioned that it sucks.

I've heard they're going to start selling Vinyl again in a few major retail outlets because retro is in again I guess. Either that or maybe people just don't want to deal with DVD-A/SACD

Peoples Records is no longer around. It flooded about a year ago when the upper part of the building caught on fire.

Other than that I really don't know anything about music/music stores.

I was just in their new location a few days ago. I scored a copy of OF A MESH's Broken LP. I will be back to get their other goodies. Its "okay" so far. I know Steve who works there. He is on Wierd Records as the band Demons.

Underground Sounds has that really musically elite guy that owns and works there with his cool black dog. He's fun to listen to. They're always hip with the latest Sub Pop records.

Encore is unorganized but fun to find old stuff.

Wazoo is eggcellent but limited.

Rock of Ages has too much crap to sort through and too many crappy new releases and not enough good new releases. They are often behind on their catalog. It's expansive though which is good. Also, too many t-shirts and pipes and bongs.

Dearborn Music is almost PERFECT.

Dearborn has always been a favorite. My ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE record store in MI is Car City in St Clair Shores. Seriously, Zac, check it out. Its worth the 25 min drive. The store has TONS of used CDs for less than 8 dollars, a HUGE collection of post-punk, indie, punk, new wave releases, and a very knowledgable staff. Its on Harper between 8 and 9 mile. Easy to get to from 94, just take the exit for 8 mile and you get off on Harper Ave, just stay straight and its on the right side by a hardware store. :)

Encore is also my second fav, I could spend hours in there. And I have.

Wazoo is good. But I always feel like they think i'm going to steal everything in there.
